Endoscopy and Laparoscopy

What is endoscopy?

Garbí Veterinary Hospital offers endoscopy, which is a procedure in which a tube with a camera and a light source is put through the body’s natural orifices, such as the respiratory tract, the intestinal tract, or through surgical incisions to observe internal body cavities. Instruments may also be used to perform minimally invasive surgeries at the same time (cauterisation of tissues, removal of cysts, polyps or tumours…).

Endoscopy requires anaesthesia, so it does not cause any pain or trauma for the patient. It can be used to examine the nose, ears, digestive system, respiratory system, reproductive system and urinary system.

When is endoscopy considered?

The veterinarians at Garbí Veterinary Hospital use endoscopy to determine the cause of sneezing, vomiting, diarrhoea or urinary problems in pets and use it to remove objects from the nose, lungs, stomach or oesophagus without painful surgery.

Recovery time is immediate, so once it’s done, your pet can resume their normal life right away.

What is Laparoscopy?

Veterinary laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows vets to examine and operate on organs inside an animal’s abdominal cavity through small incisions. A laparoscope, equipped with a video camera and light, is inserted, projecting images onto a monitor. This provides a detailed and precise view of the internal organs. This method reduces wound size, post-operative pain, and recovery time for pets.

When is a Laparoscopy Considered?

A veterinary laparoscopy is considered for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Diagnostically, it’s useful for exploring the cause of abdominal problems, taking biopsies from organs like the liver or spleen, or identifying internal tumours. Therapeutically, it’s an option for surgeries such as sterilisation, removing undescended testicles, preventing gastric torsion, or gallbladder removal, offering significant benefits over open surgery
