Heatstroke in Animals: Prevention and Timely Action

With the arrival of high temperatures, the well-being of our companion animals can be seriously compromised. Heatstroke is a veterinary emergency that occurs when an animal cannot properly regulate its body temperature. Unlike humans, dogs and cats don’t sweat; their primary cooling mechanism is panting, which can be insufficient on hot days or in poorly ventilated spaces.

The most common symptoms are: accelerated breathing, deep red tongue, weakness, vomiting, trembling, reddened mucous membranes, diarrhoea, dizziness, and in severe cases, seizures or loss of consciousness. The most susceptible animals are brachycephalic breeds (such as bulldogs or pugs), puppies, older animals, long-haired cats, or those with chronic illnesses.

To prevent it:

  • Avoid walks between 12 pm and 6 pm.
  • Provide fresh water at all times.
  • Ensure shaded areas or well-ventilated spaces.
  • Never leave them alone inside a car, even for a short time.

If you detect any symptoms, cool the animal with lukewarm water (never cold or iced water) and urgently contact your vet.

At Hospital Veterinario Garbí (Carretera N-II, km 643), we are prepared to act in these types of emergencies and help you prevent them.
