Legal requirements for travelling with pets outside the EU

Every country has specific regulations regarding the entry of companion animals. Compliance with international standards is essential to avoid customs issues or mandatory quarantine periods. General requirements often include:

  • Pet Passport: A mandatory document in many countries certifying the animal’s identity and vaccination history.

  • Approved Microchip: This must comply with ISO standards 11784/11785 for animal identification.

  • Rabies Vaccination: Most countries require a valid rabies vaccination, administered at least 21 days before travel.

  • Rabies Serology (Titres) Test: Some countries, such as Australia or Japan, require a blood test to confirm the effectiveness of the vaccination.

  • Antiparasitic Treatments: Depending on your destination, specific treatments for internal and external parasites may be mandatory.

  • Veterinary Health Certificate: An official document issued by an authorised vet with access to the CEXGAN (Livestock Foreign Trade) platform.
