What is Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a procedure in which our veterinarians at Hospital Veterinario Las Tablas in Madrid insert a tube equipped with a camera and a light source through the body’s natural openings, such as the airways or the intestinal tract. It can also be performed through surgical incisions into, for example, the abdominal cavity or a joint, to observe internal body cavities. The endoscope can also incorporate instruments to perform biopsies or minimally invasive surgical interventions simultaneously (such as tissue cauterisation or the removal of cysts, polyps, or tumours).
Endoscopy requires anaesthesia; therefore, it does not cause any pain or trauma to the patient. It can be used to explore the nose, ears, digestive system, respiratory system, reproductive system, and urinary tract.
When is an Endoscopy considered?
It is recommended to determine the underlying cause of sneezing, vomiting, diarrhoea, or urinary problems in pets. It can also be used to retrieve foreign objects from the nose, lungs, stomach, or oesophagus without the need for painful surgery.
Recovery time is immediate, so once the procedure is complete, the pet can resume their daily routine straight away.
